VENUE THE BEDFORD, LONDON DATE 10/09/2023 Opening this third annual celebration of the rich, varied world of prog is an improv set from The Fierce & The Dead’s Matt Stevens and Kevin Feazey (the latter a fitting replacement for an ailing Andy Tillison) on guitar and bass respectively. Both seated and getting thoroughly lost in the process, theirs is a set of four weird, wonderful and otherworldly in-the-moment creations. Employing an arsenal of effects (at one point Feazey deploys a “mystery” pedal just to see what it does), they meld ambient space rock with psychedelia, country, threatening drones and dreamy jazz funk. Gentle waves of sound swirl around and slowly build into walls of noise then dissipate. Stevens stretches his guitar sound in all directions, imitating at different points choral voices, flute…
