Norwegian maverick confirms his position as a master mood technician. The second Rural Tapes album sees producer and multi-instrumentalist Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen expanding his sound palate from the cool library and foundation of last year’s of guest musicians, including the returning talents of REM’s Peter Buck and saxophonist Terry Edwards, Inner Space Music is indeed a suitable soundtrack for deep listening journeys and interior contemplation. The watery drone of the opening title track suggests submergence, like hearing a city from under the sea. In contrast, Bossa Nova For The Contrails Of My Tears features parping synth and technicolour strings backing a cynically whimsical monologue about air travel – ‘A miracle inconvenience’ – while is a lush, cinematic reverie set to the reverb-heavy pit-pat of a drum machine, Fellini remaking a…
