The wizard/true star’s latest set of celeb hook-ups doesn’t quite lift off. Space Force sees the 73-year-old Todd Rundgren getting out of his own creative “echo chamber” (his words) by talents on new, half-formed or previously shelved song ideas. It’s a mixed bag. Featuring Adrian Belew, Puzzle is a strong opener – a melancholy, synthed-up piece with hints of Bowie’s swan song output. Rundgren’s in-the-bones musicality and production skills are everywhere – in the art-pop of Artist In Residence Crowded House’s Neil Finn, the wacky debut LP he produced in 1971), and the moody Thomas Dolby hook-up I’m Not Your Dog.
