Extreme prog metal with an epic spirit. Formed barely two years ago by three former members of virtuoso death metal crew Obscura, Obsidious have pedigree and fearsome chops. Although opener Under Black Skies begins at full, brutal pelt, growl-phobic listeners are encouraged to stick with it. Vocalist Javi Perera has a monumental clean tone that, combined with his bandmates’ melodic but vicious backdrop, is consistently dazzling. Fans of technicality will love every second, but the real winner here is melody. From the succinct assault of Sense Of Lust to the convoluted sprawl of I Am, these songs are uniformly blessed with enormous hooks, even as the music behind them clatters and churns malevolently. The title track is a maze of riffs and symphonic bluster, with echoes of Norwegian mavericks Borknagar.…
