UK post-rockers walk softly but carry a big riff.
The instrumental trio of guitarist Dan Scrivener, his drumming brother James and bassist Ethan Bishop explore post-rock, math rock and sludgy metal on their second album together. The music flows between open, ambient sections and heavily layered riff workouts, each track starting from quiet, glimmering beginnings and travelling, via crescendo peaks and pianissimo valleys, towards a nigh-inevitable effects-drenched apex.
James Scrivener belongs to the very modern school of drumming that favours a busy style, so even in the drifting, swirling sections of Solace the drums maintain a constant background chatter. The guitar tone and riffing style occasionally touch upon Mastodon territory, an impression bolstered by freewheeling drum rolls.
