French post-rockers impress again with album four.
Despite its seemingly timely reference, Lost In Kiev’s name was actually derived from an ex-guitarist being stuck in the country during a snowstorm. The Parisians’ post-rock exploits have always exuded feeling, though, and with Rupture they are giving it their best shot.
There’s the usual musical signatures – instrumental swells, textured guitar and sharp drums which dagger through the mix – but the prominence of electronic and synth swathes help the quartet to rise above. Ominous opener We Are crunches into oblivion, but then Squaring The Circle goes all John Carpenter on us. The danger of instrumental post-rock is ponderous repetition, although the cinematic reflections here mean the skip button is rarely needed.
