A sequel to 2021’s The Uncrowned King Pt 1, US symphonic art-rock outfit Evership return with the second act of their characterful retelling of minister-turned author Harold Bell Wright’s early 20th-century novel of the same name. It concludes a two-hour odyssey of princesses, vagabonds and discovery with vivid colours and instrumentation. From the offset, what’s instantly apparent is that much of the whimsy has been drained from their music in the time since its predecessor, replaced by driving, 70s rock that’s more influenced by the likes of ELO than classic prog. Missive Pursuits balances epic guitar work and lofty, storytelling vocals, while Coronation’s Brian May-channelling riffs and jutting, medieval grooves make for a pleasantly silly juxtaposition.
