Persuasive study of three left-field pathfinders. While it might be the case that most pop music is “post-pop” now, the artists discussed in this US-based history professor’s book remain groundbreaking figures to a certain generation. The exploratory yet emotionally powerful work of Sylvian/Japan, Hollis/Talk Talk and Bush has often been eulogised, usually as art-rock or post-rock, even as antipop. The influence upon them of Bowie, Roxy, Scott Walker and others is undersold here, but it’s a fascinating read, if perhaps too in thrall to the Mark Fisher school of cultural theory and hauntology, and unaware of how much UK music journalism has discussed these diamonds.
