Fascinating and often candid photo book charting the prog polymath’s life. The best way to approach Overexposed + Underdeveloped is as a photographic companion to Devin Townsend’s 2016 autobiography Only Half There. The book is arranged chronologically, beginning with baby pictures and childhood drawings, through Townsend’s teenage years and adulthood as he struggled for artistic direction. There are a handful of images from professional photoshoots, but most of the shots are candid and unpolished – none more so than the sight of Townsend with a telephone up his bum backstage at the Tonight Show. There’s plenty of chat about the guitars pictured herein, a lot of jokes about hair and poor fashion choices, while Townsend is honest about the personal challenges he’s faced during his career.
