Impressively robust live career celebration from Ultravox frontman. Midge Ure celebrated his 70th birthday six days early, onstage at the Royal Albert Hall, leafing through his back catalogue to produce sterling versions of some of the gems within, including some of Ultravox’s most sweeping, prog-adjacent moments. The title track of Ultravox’s 1984 album Lament is one of several songs given wintry string arrangement, which pushes this melancholy masterpiece to new heights of elegant despair. The entire Vienna album is given a sparkling outing which underlines its conceptual credentials. Ure’s edgy guitar stabs the shadowy, synthy surfaces of New Europeans and Passing Strangers, and his wellpreserved voice is used to spine-tingling effect on the album’s timeless title track. Best of all from the album is a scamper through Kraftwerk homage Mr X.…
