Oldfield-loving multi-instrumentalist takes a trip down memory lane.
Robert Reed’s Sanctuary album series is part paean to and part pastiche of Mike Oldfield’s first three solo albums, with an accomplished, if somewhat obsessional evocation of that style.
On Sanctuary Covered Reed tackles some of his favourite non-Oldfield tunes. Angharad Brinn sings beautifully on the traditional songs Scarborough Fair and Oh Hush Thee My Dove over deft keyboard and guitar arrangements. The Tornados’ Telstar is reimagined with folky intro, twinkling glockenspiel, tolling bells and recorder from seasoned Oldfield collaborator Les Penning, while Theme From Witchfinder General finds Reed going Full Oldfield, his skirling lines sounding like the man himself was in the studio.
This produces a weird double nostalgia, as if Reed is not only looking back fondly on these tunes but…
