Steve Hillage’s further adventures in the ambient world. Former Gong guitarist Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy’s ambient house for grown-ups has been maturing beautifully over the past four decades, since the roots of it were heard on 1979’s Rainbow Dome Musick. Route 77, released as Mirror System, their System 7 offshoot, features 60 minutes of pulsing beats, synth washes and, here and there, Hillage’s soaring, fluid, yet never overpowering guitar. Inspired by big sky country sunsets, Route 77 offers a cosmic road trip. It begins with a cover of Ry Cooder’s Paris Texas, before the pulsing majesty of Avenue Of Lights takes hold.
