Take a trip to West Africa via Norway. Named after a district in Bergen, the debut album from Kronstad 23 may be Norwegian in origin but there’s a distinct West African flavour to the music. Jobber Overtid’s instrumental fusion is played with an airy touch, allowing Aleksander Tøsdal Tveit’s guitar lines to skip over the playful grooves. Co-drummers Hans Christian Dalgaard and Ivar Thormodsæter tap into the rhythmic language of West Africa, particularly the music of Mali, a sense enhanced by the sound of a djembe on the tracks Mugg and Dalen. There are diversions into other sounds and styles. Minibil takes the group closer to Weather Report-style fusion, while Feilbarig has an inviting, ethereal quality and the hypnotic pulse of Knark ventures into dub.
