Norwegian prog-folk team-up sets off for the stars.
Eighteen months on from the stunning Downpour, Oslo’s Kanaan take their highly evolved stoner rock deeper into progressive territory. A mesmerising collaboration with Nordic folk mavericks Ævestaden, Langt, Langt Vekk (‘Far, Far Away’) obliterates any boundaries between earthy folk and freewheeling psych.
Alternating between blissfully peculiar acoustic meanderings and wild, electrified jams, the vivid hybrid that emerges is far more fluid and coherent than anyone could have anticipated. Ævestaden’s deft use of traditional instruments – lyre, fiddle and mouth harp included – give elegant opener Ganglåt Bortåt and wistful ballad Farvel a dreamy vibe, providing contrast with the fluid acid rock improvisations of Habbor Og Signe and Vallåt Efter C.G. Färje.
