By his own admission, Simon Godfrey’s latest album is “10 songs about self-sabotage”, reasoning that “failure changes us as profoundly as success does”. But while How I Was Defeated might sometimes slow to contemplate life’s speed bumps, like the best summery-sounding pop prog, it ultimately shines vibrantly despite its dark underbelly.
Impressively, Godfrey wrote, produced and played the entire thing, but he sounds like a full-blown band at full bore when he needs to.
