Nine Skies offshoot explores tragedy through storytelling. The world isn’t short of concept albums that explore real-world issues through allegorical flights of fancy. But few are as affecting as Frant1c’s debut album. On the face of it, A Brand New World centres on two soulmates who find themselves separated, with one cast adrift in a strange dystopian landscape. So far, so sci-fi, but it takes on a greater emotional resonance due to the fact that it was written by keyboardist Anne-Claire Rallo following the death of her husband and Nine Skies bandmate Eric Bouillette. With other members of that band contributing to what is essentially a solo project there are some inevitable comparisons with the French neo-prog outfit, but it stands distinct from Nine Skies’ own tribute to Bouillette on…
