Jacob Holm-Lupo paints his hometown in synth soundscapes. No one could accuse White Willow’s Jacob Holm-Lupo of taking a busman’s holiday with Donner. The Van Gennep Gap follows 2021’s Hesitant Light with a sound rooted in synthwave and electronica, far from White Willow’s progressive folk rock. It was inspired by the sights and landscapes of Holm-Lupo’s hometown of Grenland, Norway and it’s easy to imagine listening to the music while driving around the quiet streets as the sun dips below the horizon on a chilly evening. Built around synthesisers and programmed beats, the songs shift between moods and sounds. There’s a haunting quality to Grey Skies Over Stridsklev that contrasts with the energetic bounce of The 7-11 Ice Cream Trek, which boasts excellent funky guitar work. Kebab Kowboys brings in…
