Shades Of Grey

When lockdown halted Dream Theater’s touring plans, vocalist James LaBrie had a chance encounter that led to the creation of his fourth solo album, Beautiful Shade Of Grey. He tells Prog how teaming up with his son Chance and Eden’s Curse bassist Paul Logue gave him the opportunity to show off his more melodic side.

Aside from pure talent, musical success also depends on luck and timing. For Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie, that sliding doors moment occurred in Glasgow airport following the culmination of Dream Theater’s 2020 tour. Wandering through the terminal prior to his flight home to Toronto, he fortuitously encountered Paul Logue, of melodic metallers Eden’s Curse, with whom he’d worked with some nine years earlier. Sharing a coffee and with the world on the brink of lockdown, the pair agreed to consider a potential project and, within four weeks, were exchanging ideas. “Paul is an extremely talented guy,” enthuses LaBrie. “In 2011 he asked me to guest on a song called No Holy Man on one of their albums.
