The Hurting VIRGIN/UMR Early 80s landmark still dazzles with candour and invention. If, 40 years ago, Tears For Fears’ debut saw them dismissed in some grumpy quarters as ‘just’ a pretty-boy synthpop duo, time and tide have very much shifted that perspective. Their musical range and ambition flowered on subsequent albums, from the psychedelic prog-soul 80s kiss-off The Seeds Of Love, to the epic sweep of last year’s triumphant comeback, The Tipping Point. They always contained multitudes.
