Later evolving into the band with vocalist Annie Haslam, who scored a one-off hit with Northern Lights, Renaissance were at first a different beast. Departing Yardbirds singer Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty wanted to do something, in the latter’s words, “more poetic… not so heavy”, envisioning this new project as a blend of rock, classical and folk. It didn’t last long as such, and Relf and McCarty left, but the seeds they sowed stayed in the DNA of the project thereafter.
