The Complete San Francisco Moog 1968-72 VG+ RECORDS Synth pioneer’s unearthed recordings get a CD release. Doug McKechnie was one of the very first players of the modular Moog IIIc synthesiser – he gained access to number 004 in 1968 due to the generosity of his flatmate’s wealthy father. Although principally a singer, he played piano and quickly learned how to programme and play it. He took the temperamental instrument away from white-coated studio technicians and out on the road, where he recorded his improvised live performances onto tape, an archive that was packed away, unheard until a few years ago. McKechnie didn’t realise at the time how groundbreaking his music was and The First Exploration, recorded in 1968, sounds exceptionally accomplished and imaginative with its rich, shifting bass lines…
