Individual Choice/Open Mind/No Absolute Time EDEL Remastered trio from jazz fusion pioneer. The ever-inventive violinist Ponty’s work with Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea and more recently Jon Anderson shifted perceptions of how the instrument can be deployed (the Frenchman also appeared on Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire De Melody Nelson and Elton John’s Honky Chateau). While most of those outlets allowed him to do his own thing (Zappa was, he’s said, the only person to command him not to deviate from his parts), on his solo albums he’s enjoying fully cutting loose and flying free. His 70s work leaned into hippiedom but still constructed stable platforms over which he could sprinkle his magic.
