Eye SUPERNATURAL CAT Slow and soporific second solo album from Ufomammut frontman. On this follow-up to 2018’s Doppelebben, mononymous Ufomammut founder Urlo ventures further from the doom metal realm into, well, equally doomy pastures, without so much of the metal. Rather than skullcrunching heaviness and demonic vocals, Eye is heavy on smoky midnight atmospheres but light on traditional rock dynamics. At times the Italian’s gothically shrouded, medieval-leaning tunes invoke the spirit of early Dead Can Dance, while elsewhere they drift into drone rock territory. This sometimes makes for a fleetingly captivating, lie-in-a-darkened-room- and-breathe-it-in experience. Subtle changes to the sonic structure help on that score, as when Neurosis singer Steve Von Till’s gravelly delivery lends character to the otherwise funereal Confession, or when weeping violin and windswept sound effects prick up…
