World leaders are asking Veronica Lake to cut her hair, the Mona Lisa can no longer maintain her inscrutable smile, and ‘nothing is as good as they say it is – that’s the way it is’. It must be a Sparks album, their 26th in fact, and The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte (Island) is reliably full of delicately detonated surprises. It finds the Mael brothers, half a century into their curious career, in a great place, revered in both music and film worlds. Their own world, however, remains a dry, ironic, twitchy place, and this relentless set of hardcore synthpop songs – closer currently to Suicide than Moroder – renders It’s Sunny Today and That Was Fun regretful and sad and When You Leave a bouncy celebration.
