Twelve Half Steps ESOTERIC Floyd’s desk guru engineers his own sounds. Andy Jackson is best known as Pink Floyd’s go-to engineer/mixer, entrusted for decades as their favourite pair of ears. Meanwhile he quietly crafts away at his solo work, which has given us 2014’s gently intriguing Signal To Noise and 2016’s quirky 73 Days At Sea. Twelve Half Steps is different again, a fully instrumental offering and a collection of tracks in 12 modal scales. Such structural and technical discipline will be more appreciated by musicians than laymen, but the atmospheres created will perhaps woo the latter. There’s rich variety here, from C-Scape’s proximityto Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross to the spooky suspenseful drama of Darien Gap. Attenuation Deficit drapes keening guitars over forceful rhythms.
