Holocene PELAGIC Album 10 and The Ocean keep getting deeper. It takes a degree of unbridled ambition to chart the paleontological history of the planet in musical form but that’s what Germany’s The Ocean have been doing over their recent albums. Holocene follows thematically from 2018’s Phanerozoic I (Palaeozoic) and 2020’s Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic, but sees the band pushing out into previously unexplored musical directions. “A sound of great depth and scope.” It was born from ideas from synth player Peter Voigtmann that sparked the imagination of guitarist and bandleader Robin Staps.
