AVKRVST may have a perplexing aversion to vowels, but there’s little mystery about the quality glowing from their debut album, The Approbation. The Norwegian quintet’s first full-length recording is a glorious opening shot, a near-masterclass in metal-tinged prog. Fans of Opeth, Steven Wilson and Between The Buried And Me will doubtless be impressed by the way The Pale Moon juggles its discordant attack with lucid, dream-like swashes of sound, while the rumbling Isolation jags and snags with just the right kind of awkwardness.
