‘Hello, and how did you find yourself this morning? Well, I just rolled back the sheets and there I was.’ Thus begins the Bonzo Dog Band’s 1969 single, the Vivian Stanshall composition Mister Slater’s Parrot. Tonight, Mr Slater himself, the band’s ex-saxist Rodney, sings about his former pet, while a man dressed as a parrot flits through the audience offering lucky punters the mic so they can squawk “hello”. Humour in music can soon pall but this sold-out show proves that Viv Stanshall’s singularly imaginative, incisive work lives on.
