It makes perfect sense then, that new kids on the psychelectronica block The Utopia Strong should open tonight’s show. Steve Davis, Kavus Torabi and Michael J York improvise two lengthy pieces, the second of which vibrates the air like a lost Fripp & Eno recording. York’s plethora of percussion, bagpipes and woodwind are manipulated almost beyond recognition through the signal processing chain. Davis’ percolating modular synth sequences create a miasma behind Torabi’s shamanistic incantations. Heavily effected guitar pierces the veil, recalling Fripp’s gorgeous Evening Star melody.
