SUPPORT CROOKED ROYALS
With their fifth album Djent Is Not A Genre, US prog metallers Periphery pushed the dichotomy at the heart of their sound to even greater extremes. The meat-grinder Meshuggah riffs were as crushing as ever, but the choruses took on a more anthemic bent, edging the band more towards the arena-sized ambitions of Architects or Bring Me The Horizon than even their biggest djent contemporaries. Playing to a sold-out Roundhouse, they might just be onto something.
Granted, it’s hardly Wembley, but the venue is already filled as openers Crooked Royals offer a perfunctory vision of ‘progressive metalcore’. Their songs might be technical enough to earn the progressive tag, but ultimately are just ornate dressing on a style that is being copied ad nauseam…
