The pairing of Jon Gomm’s atypical acoustic guitar playing and Jo Quail’s surreal cello looping is perfect. Here are two individuals pushing the boundaries of their instruments in unique ways, and tonight’s audience are all too willing to listen, breathless.
The venue, a converted former mill, is deadly silent as Jo Quail stacks together layer upon layer of mournful cellos and percussive fingerboard witchcraft. Punters sheepishly whisper their order at the bar and a profound appreciation for her craft resonates. You can hear her hands thump against her instrument’s gangly neck from the back of the room as she creates a heartbeat rhythm on Gold.
