Recent years have seen Ripley Johnson’s other ventures – Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo – take more of a backseat to Rose City Band, where he explores a blissful strain of Californian country-psych. Inspired by obscure private press records from the 70s, Sol Y Sombra (Thrill Jockey) sees his quintet journey into a sun-baked idyll of languid guitar grooves and gliding pedal steel, epitomised by Open Roads and Sunlight Daze, which seem to blow in on a warm breeze. Less horizontal but equally endearing is Slipper Imp And Shakaerator (p(doom) Records) from Australia’s Babe Rainbow. The Gold Coast trio – signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s new label – offer loose experiments in sound that harness acidpop, hippie-funk and weird electronica to telling effect, particularly on the spaceship-flying…
