Wilson and co’s ghostly tales expanded.
With hindsight, it’s interesting how little crossover Deadwing has with the music Steven Wilson recently selected on the “alternative 80s” compilation Intrigue, which is full of oblique, counter-intuitive ideas. In 2005, he preferred to rock in a linear manner. Porcupine Tree’s eighth album was, nonetheless, key in establishing them as commercially viable.
“Full-on fans will love every twitch and tweak.” Around half was conceived as scoring a screenplay, a “Lynchian ghost story” constructed by Wilson and director Mike Bennion. When that stalled, the tracks formed the foundation of Deadwing. The result, featuring guest guitar from Adrian Belew and Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt, was more alt-metal than prog, and its post-grunge confidence built the ladder to the bold state-of-a-generation proselytising of 2007’s Fear Of A Blank…
