Rare solo experiments from jazz-prog guru. A key figure of the Canterbury scene, the late bassist (and more besides) Hopper was a centrifugal force in the early albums of Soft Machine and made valuable contributions to landmark works by Syd Barrett, Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers. Two neglected solo albums from 2003/2004 are excavated and remastered as a complementary pair here: they bounce off each other nicely, conversing until eventually the listener picks up on little nods and winks between them. This is free-form, often-improvised music – more jazz than fusion – which makes the listener work to stay on board, but if the challenge is accepted the rewards can invigorate.
