Melodic folk prog experimentalism that’ll soothe life’s aches and pains. London-based singer-songwriter Emma Tricca was handpicked by Nick Mason as opener on Saucerful Of Secrets’ 2018 tour. Tricca’s work might not seem Floydy per se, but her delicate, acoustic guitar storytelling often has Syd Barrett somewhere in the expression, mixed with her passions for Italian proggers Le Orme and estimable jazz-folkers Pentangle. Fourth album Aspirin Sun (what a Syd title!) keeps that feel, Tricca’s vocals on a Karen Dalton/Vashti Bunyan axis in a melody-driven set, texturised by ambient Americana and watercolour minimalism. Backed by former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, The Dream Syndicate’s Jason Victor on guitar and bassist Pete Galub, Tricca’s close-mic’d vocals have a calming ASMR effect, and there’s a touch of Spiritualized in opening track Devotion.
