Dom Lawson buckles up for a delve into the darker, heavier side.

Emerging from the pagan metal underground, eyes ablaze with madness, The Wolves Of Avalon are on gleefully bonkers form on Y Gododdin (Godreah). Rooted in grimy extremity but feverishly progressive and quite, quite mad, these five wayward tracks evoke visions of this septic isle’s bloody, battle-bound past, but with rather more lysergic surrealism than you get in most history books. In particular, The Shining Company is a fantastic song. Equally fascinating but far less accessible, Liturgy’s 93696 (Thrill Jockey) requires commitment: 83 minutes long and always bewildering, it veers from crazed math rock and sumptuous shoegaze to noirish chamber music and free-form noise.
