Enigmatic prog metal project takes a big step forward. The brooding atmospherics of Sermon’s debut album, The Birth Of The Marvellous, made it one 2019’s most intriguing releases. Fronted by an anonymous, golden-masked outsider known solely as Him, a smattering of live performances followed, but the band never gained the momentum their music warranted. This time, things may be different. If their debut offering was all about tension and release, Of Golden Verse feels more immediate, threatening and pissed off at the world. Their musical mantra is the same, with the haunted nursery rhyme motifs of Senessence and the villainous séance of Royal continuing where its predecessor left off, but with greater conviction.
