Occasionally brilliant third LP from 65daysofstatic mastermind. Since 2011’s Labyrinths, 65daysofstatic’s Paul Wolinski has released two albums, an EP and several singles under his Polinski moniker. Where his main band have increasingly focused on generative and algorithmic music, Telex From MIDI City is instead more premeditated both thematically and musically. Its core idea comes from academic and polemicist David Graeber – the notion that the world we see has been imagined into being, and that we could imagine it differently. Re-contextualising timbres and tech from the past is key here. The slickest tracks – Distant Friend, I Love You! and Other Worlds Parts 1 & 2 – heavily feature jittery 90s breakbeats and 80s synths.
