Chris Roberts samples the new releases on the prog/rock boundary.

Elusiveness and mystery, always present in the solo work of John Foxx, are the slow-burning fuel of The Arcades Project (Metamatic), his first ever album of piano instrumentals. He worked with Harold Budd on 2003’s Translucence/Drift Music, but that was wilfully abstract. This feels more centred, without sacrificing any evocative dreamlike qualities. A contrast to his last (Ultravox!-referencing) album Howl, which came as close as Foxx now ever will to ‘rock’, this quietly muses over fin de siècle Paris. The musician is a flâneur, finding correspondence in unexpected sights and offering responsive sounds. Its minimalism is moving; its restraint rich in reverie.
