Nick D’Virgilio and Steve Vai guest on ex-Zappa man’s off-the-wall latest. This guest-heavy follow-up to 2016’s Scambot 2 offers more proof of the vast musical abilities and left-field imagination of ex-Zappa guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist Mike Keneally. A tight nine-song set, The Thing That Knowledge Can’t Eat opens with quirky piano-led skit Logos, heads into 70s-style alt-rock with the strident Both Sides Of The Street and then turns on a sixpence for oddball acoustic piece Mercury In Second Grade. Keneally’s voice is soft and breathy on the ironically titled Big Hit Song and gentle Spigot (Draw The Pirate), featuring drums from BBT’s Nick D’Virgilio.
