After a traumatic 2022, during which she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent successful surgery, Floor Jansen has earned this revitalising rebirth.
Despite being omnipresent in the symphonic metal realm since the turn of the century, Paragon is the Nightwish singer’s first solo album. She’s steered away from writing anything that resembles either her day job or any of the multiple projects she’s lent her versatile tones to over the years. Instead, Paragon is an exercise in sumptuous but intimate pop-rock songs, with Jansen’s voice given rather more room to breathe than it generally gets during Nightwish’s intricate, progressive metal epics.
With nods to artsy, big-budget 80s pop, there’s plenty for prog fans to enjoy here. Paragon strikes a balance…
