Irish prog metal prospects on the rise. Well, this is a belter. Self-professed ‘tech noir’ group The Enigma Division features ex-Xerath guitarist/keyboard player Conor McGouran and drummer-vocalist Ben Wanders, joined in their new venture by bassist Ronan Burns. The guitars here are crunchy, and the rhythm section possesses heft and power, yet despite the heaviness, the overall vibe is energising and upbeat. It’s refreshing to hear music this punchy with clean, passionate vocals and a mood that’s hopeful rather than wallowing in gloom or menace. They can reach towards djent riffage in The Age Of Discovery and McGouran knows how to shred, yet they’ll balance that out with the rich piano lines and gentle washes of synth in the excellent ballad Clarity.
