Experimental rock, art-rock, jazz rock prog jazz, jazz, proto-prog… name a genre with ‘rock’, ‘jazz’ or ‘prog’ in it, and during their lifetime Soft Machine have blown a tune in it. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge, a lot of serious talent through the in/out doors and a lot of fabulous music from this band name across their 50-plus years. Anyone who hasn’t regularly cocked an ear during the different phases across that half-century might have difficulty finding a stylistic thread running from the original, Canterbury scene cornerstone Soft Machine of the mid-60s, to today’s jazz-you-like-it version. But, not really surprisingly, the DNA helix has endured and is audible.
