Threshold keyboard player reflects on four decades in prog. Threshold’s Richard West takes readers on an amiable amble through his life on and offstage in this charming autobiography. Devoid of rock star pretensions, West starts out playing piano in church, while one unfortunate experience with drugs leaves him feeling so discombobulated he never dabbles again (he recounts with horror the experience of touring alongside US band Psychotic Waltz, with their enthusiasm for bongs and porn). While it’s not The Dirt by any stretch of the imagination, a little rock’n’roll tomfoolery makes its presence felt in Maybe A Writer. There are onstage tantrums and a backstage dust-up, although West discretely avoids revealing the identity of the participants.
