Jazzy yet accessible debut from star-studded transatlantic combo.
The pairing of US drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Toto, Sting) and Jacob Holm-Lupo of Norwegian art-rockers White Willow may seem an unlikely one at first glance coming, as they do, from somewhat different places geographically and musically. However, with this debut collaboration they create a synthesis that’s both cohesive and convincing.
Sitting very much in jazz fusion territory, this is an instrumental collection that relies less on flash and unnecessary displays of virtuosity than it does on tunes and feel – more the accessible end of Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny than the inscrutability of Mahavishnu Orchestra or the quirk of Brand X.
