Folk, jazz and grooves make for the musical equivalent of a Pimm’s on the lawn. Having backed any number of musicians including big hitters Peter Gabriel, David Byrne and R&B superstar Frank Ocean, the pastoral prog on offer from multi-instrumentalist and singer Ben Reed is ripe for discovery and delight as he takes the spotlight for himself. Bandaged – his fourth solo album – is a whimsical, sometimes head-spinning treat that finds him backed by Caravan contributor Jimmy Hastings and Steve Howe Trio’s Ross Stanley, as well as pedal steel master BJ Cole. With such luminaries on board, it should come as little surprise that from the Canterbury scene but also builds on those influences to maintain an identity that’s definitely its own.
