Fanciful journey of personal discovery from retro-leaning French pairing.
This debut album from two French composers, Simon Senizergues, who also cover much of the main instrumentation and vocals, is an ambitious narrative following central character Usky and his quest for balance in a life marked by family secrets, disastrous relationships, addiction, spiritual dislocation and more.
Musically much of the album has a dreamlike, reverb-heavy quality to it, whether exploring late-60s prog and psych-pop flavours like Cycle Of Life and Give Me A Veil, which throws some church organ to a sparse floaty surrealistic soundscape, or alongside gritty funk in as it conjures up echoes of Rogers Waters’ ranting on The Wall.
