Exquisite fifth from Jeffes Jr and his multi-limbed troupe. As ever with all things Penguin Cafe, rhythm rules on Rain Before Seven. Yet there’s a renewed sense of freedom on these instrumental pieces, due to the album being conceived while central force Arthur Jeffes was stuck in Tuscany during lockdown. The emotional release of his eventual return to the UK is pressed deep into the cinematic swells of Welcome To London. The racing Find Your Feet is flooded with much the same thing, as Jeffes and string arranger/musical director Oli Langford inject various flavours into the mix (balafon, cuatro, ukulele and viola included). This playfulness extends to Galahad, a tribute to Jeffes’ late dog, delivered in 15/8 time signature, and In Re Budd, which moves with a Latin feel, buoyed…
