Norwegian prog psychonauts turn down the volume on their 31st album.
Motorpsycho have always been inclined record, most flamboyantly on the 40-minute suite N.O.X. from 2020’s All Is One. But they have also always explored concision and melody and Yay! is almost entirely in this vein with acoustic guitars, mandolin, congas, zither, Mellotron, reedy organs and synths weaving their spell.
There’s a waft of early Pink Floyd at Yes on the swooning vocal melodies of Patterns; and Sentinels sounds like something David Crosby might have composed for Crosby Stills & Nash. But if there’s a West Coast influence, Loch Meaningless comes, in the title at least, from the west coast of Scotland, although guitarist Bent Sæther actually sings a tale of triumph in love.
