When not providing session and live guitar to The Pineapple Thief, Beren Matthews plays a rather more abrasive brand of guitar rock with Cornish band, Grip-Like Vice, and they back him here on a set that successfully blends leftfooted post-punk with nods to neo-prog. For a man who inevitably fills the less-than-eye-catching role of backing-musician-in-black-T-shirt in his usual day job, Matthews injects these compositions with a fair bit of personality, not least in lyrics that draw on personal turmoil laced with caustic humour. ‘She’s dragging my name around the town/Which makes me think that I must be famous now,’ he sings on Feign Martyr as an angular, XTC-style riff frames the whole thing and Buzzcockian ‘woah-woahs’ punctuate the chorus.
